Dame Josephine Barstow’s presence at the launch of our Opera Film Season will make this evening a very special occasion. Dame Jo stars as Amelia in this
legendary performance from the Salzburg Festival given on 28 July 1990.
First performed at the Teatro Apollo, Rome on 17 February 1857 this
powerful tale of privilege, infidelity and revenge takes place in Stockholm at the Court of King Gustavus III. The dramatic narrative and great arias ensure that
Un ballo in maschera remains one of the most performed of all operas.
The performance we are seeing tonight was to have been conducted by
Herbert von Karajan, but his sudden death only a few days before led to his place being taken by Sir Georg Solti.
7pm –Dame Josephine Barstow in conversation with Barry Cheeseman
